National Leadership Team
Samara Nicholas MNZM
Poutokomanawa | Co-director | Marine Lead | EMR | Wai Connection
Northland based
Kia ora, my name is Samara Nicholas, during my time as head prefect at Kamo High School in 1998, our year 13 geography class was involved in the application for a Marine Reserve in the Whangarei Harbour, the marine biodiversity around Motukaroro inspired me!
After completing a Diploma in Environmental Management I went on to establish the Experiencing Marine Reserves programme in 2001. I was a foundation trustee of the Mountains to Sea Conservation Trust from 2002 - 2019.
As Poutokomanawa/co-director for the trust I now have more of a focus on management and impletmenting strategy (but also getting in the water as much as I can of course!) I was extremely privileged to be recognised in 2005 in the Sir Peter Blake Leadership awards as one of New Zealand 's Emerging Leaders.
In 2005 I completed a Bachelor of Applied Science degree. I have a PADI Divemaster and NAUI Skin Diving Instructor qualification. I am an experienced and regular public speaker.
My favourite marine creature is the nudibranch.
I am a proud mum to Blaze and wife to Shane, I am a active member of the Whananaki community, I love to snorkel, dive, surf, ride horses or garden in my spare time!
My career highlight was heading to the Kermadec Islands as crew member on board Young Blake Expeditions in 2012 & 2018. During October 2014, I was the MC at the New Zealand Dolphin Underwater Club 60th anniversary and was awarded the New Zealand Underwater Leo Ducker Award for Meritorius recognition and contribution to diving.
In 2018, I won the Seaweek Ocean Champion Award. I became a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to marine education and conservation on Queens birthday weekend 2018.

Lorna Doogan
National Coordinator for EMR | EMR | Wai Connection
Auckland based
Kia ora koutou, I am the National Coordinator for Experiencing Marine Reserves. I started volunteering for EMR in 2013 when I was running the Auckland University Underwater Club. By 2014 I was managing the Auckland region and since 2017 I have helped Samara run the national team.
I have always had a passion for the ocean having spent all my summers as a child in the beautiful Opito Bay, Coromandel. I was a surf lifeguard at United North Piha for 5 years earning my Bronze Medallion. Scuba diving has always been a large part of my life. I completed my Open Water Course when I was 13 and slowly worked my way up to Divemaster over the following years. While I was studying for my BSc in Biological Sciences and Marine Science at the University of Auckland, I was lucky enough to become involved in the Auckland University Underwater Club. I became the president of the club in 2013 and during this time I received my Master of a Small Commercial Dive Vessel as well as developing essential organisational skills for my role as an EMR Coordinator. My role for EMR has grown and changed in the past 11 years and I now do the underwater and landbased photography/ videography for the trust as well as funding applications and IT management.
My favourite animal would have to be the sunfish because of their gloriously uncoordinated swimming.

Northland Īnanga Spawning Habitat Restoration Project (NISHRP)
Northland based
Kia ora, my name is Nic. I joined the Mountains to Sea Conservation Trust and Whitebait Connection as a coordinator for Whangārei in May 2021. I gained a Master of Science degree in Marine Biology from Otago University in the late 90s and later trained as an Osteopath. My passions have always been in understanding the natural sciences, and exploring my local forests, rivers, and coastlines.
After almost a decade in corporate sales I decided that it was time to pursue my passions and to give back to the places I love. So, I was super excited to join the Whitebait Connection team so that I could get hands on, get back in the field, and be a part of educating and inspiring the next generation of young scientists and conservationists.
In leading the NĪSHRP team, I am looking forward to driving this work in Te Tai Tokerau to support the operational team to scale up this important mahi and increase the capacity and capability of many stakeholders, including our many hapū partners, to engage and lead this work on their own awa into the future.

My drive to preserve, conserve and restore the natural systems surrounding us in providing life sustaining services, is about survival from the most basic and instinctual level. How this occurs, in my view, is the most dynamic challenge facing most organisations, people and all other life today. The operations Mountains to Sea undertakes, achieves this outcome using the scientific method and kupu in MTS communications culture alongside tried, tested, and evolving methods of restoration and conservation of species and habitat. I am very grateful for this opportunity to conduct relationship building and data collection activities to achieve the goals of our organisation. Kaitiaki kaimahi, landowners and associated agencies staff and resources support are included in the daily MTS operations on the ground. It is great to be part of a national restoration programme protecting species that may and likely be abundant in the future due to MTS efforts.

Ko tōku tūranga ki roto o Mountains to Sea. Ko au tētahi endorsed Whitebait Connection Coordinator mai i te rohe o Te Rarawa. Engari e mahi ana ahau ki te tīma o Me He Wai, hei Mana Tukutuku- Education Coordinator. Ko te whāinga mā mātou kia whakarauora i ngā awa katoa ki roto, Te Rarawa. Me pēhea tātou e timata ai? Growing up in the Bay of Islands, I was always in, on or around the water. This meant my passion for the Taiao, and all things Māori was fostered at a young age. After leaving the beautiful Nōtā and spending 4 years at Te Whare Wananga o Waikato, I finally realised that there really is no place like home! So, I returned and moved home to the become a teacher, I then realised sitting in a classroom all day wasn't quite my cup of tea. Which brought me to Me He Wai and Whitebait Connection teams. Now, being trained as a WBC coordinator has meant that I will be able to directly contribute towards building marae and whānau capacity in a way that will positively influence the hauora of our Wai Māori and consequently the descendants of Te Rarawa.

WBC | Wai Connection
Kia ora! I am the Regional Manager for the Whitebait Connection Auckland team, and the Regional Coordinator for the Wai Connection project. I hold a Master of Science (Environmental Science – Freshwater Ecology) from the University of Auckland where I studied macroinvertebrate communities in riverine wetlands. I hope to see as many people here in Tāmaki Makaurau aware of, and in love with, our amazing freshwater environments.
I have held a long interest in the importance of connecting children with nature. Before working with Mountains to Sea, this led me to establish a nature-based programme in Playcentre and also work as a Nature Educator with school-aged children. I strongly believe that hands-on experience in nature is the key to inspiring our tamariki (and people of all ages!) to engage with, and exercise kaitiakitanga over, the beautiful environment they live in.

Kia ora koutou! I look after the communications in Tāmaki Makaurau, telling stories about the amazing mahi Mountains to Sea crew do for that unique and special taonga we call the environment. Respect to our talented and clever coordinators out there doing the real work, engaging with communities face-to-face, helping people know what what's in Te Taiao and connecting locals to their waterways. I also have another hat - Te Whau Pathway Project. This is an off-road path following West Auckland's estuary river Te Whau and an old Māori portage route. This project is also all about connecting people to green-blue spaces.

Zdravim vas, welcome! I am Anastasia, a Programme Coordinator in the Tāmaki Makaurau region. I hold a Bachelor, PG Diploma and now a Master of Science, in which I studied microplastic and rubbish pollution in urban streams. I had the privilege to spend much of my life outdoors all over Aotearoa, and my Slovak heritage has played an important role in shaping my values and connection to nature. My primary aim is to share the Whitebait Connection programme with my community and environment in a way that honours emotional affinity. Now based in Maungawhau Mount Eden, I have the opportunity to learn more about our rohe and contribute to its well-being. When I wade a stream, I’m always curious to discover what’s behind the next bend…

Kia ora! I joined the Auckland team in March 2022. I hold a BSc (Hons) Degree in Zoology from back home in Ireland, and I submitted my PhD in Ecology at the University of Auckland last year. I have called Aotearoa home for almost 6 years now and I love it here. My interests in ecology and conservation have always been very broad; I have previously worked for primate conservation projects in Southern Africa and, more recently, I focused on bird behaviour for my doctoral research. I am passionate about conservation science outreach and communication, and I adore working with kids. They are this planet’s future, and I believe helping to nurture their interest in the environment early on is crucial. I feel very privileged to now be involved in freshwater education and conservation as this is such a highly relevant area.

My name is Becky. I got involved with EMR in 2021 as a volunteer wanting to see more marine life, but quickly fell in love with sharing people's first experiences of snorkeling and connecting with the Moana that surrounds them. I grew up in Cornwall in the UK where I was always in the sea , winter or summer, and have a deep connection to the ocean and coastal environments. I got involved in a variety of conservation projects when I moved to Aotearoa that motivated me to protect the environment around us and continue to build my knowledge.
My all time favourite marine animals are Penguins, but top of my bucket list to see is a Whale Shark!

Kia ora, I’m Teschna and I am based in Auckland. I started volunteering for EMR in 2015 in both Auckland and Northland. I grew up in Northland, spending many days in and around the water. After learning to scuba dive at the Poor Knight Islands I was completely hooked and became a dive instructor in 2007 while studying marine and environmental science. I have spent several years teaching scuba diving and marine ecology overseas. But the Poor Knight Islands have remained my favourite place to explore. After returning to New Zealand, I spent some time teaching students about marine life at Kelly Tarlton’s and then discovered a lot more about land-based animals while working at Auckland Zoo. In 2020, I have come back to my watery roots to join the EMR team as an Assistant Coordinator. I am excited to get people in the water and exploring their backyard. And for you to let me know your favourite sea creature because at the moment mine changes every day! There are so many out there for us to discover.

Kia Ora,
Ko Ngati Maniapoto me Ngati Porou oku Iwi

My love for the sea began when I was a young child and had the privilege to be surfing when a pod of orca swam three breaks behind me and my father to just check out these weird mammals in their home. From that time onwards I always knew everything in the water is just as beautiful, if not more than, everything on land.
As Maori, I feel a personal responsibility and culpability to protect te Moana as it is the highway that connects all Polynesians, a vast coastal connection that calls beckons with calls of adventure and wonder. I feel in this life that I have just as much of a right to protect this blue floating ball as those who came before me felt they had the right to damage it. "Totu he whenua, whatungarongaro he tangata"

Kia ora koutou, I'm Rachel. I grew up in Canberra, Australia, but moved away as soon as I could to live by the sea so I could surf and dive. I studied Environmental Science (and Spanish and Latin American Studies) and then started my career (back in Canberra) in the Marine Division of the Australian Government Department of Environment. I soon tired of working at a desk, hours away from the ocean, so I took off to study dolphins in South Australia and then to do reef surveys and advocate for marine conservation in Vanuatu. After sailing back to NZ, the stars aligned to keep me here in Taranaki, with the ocean on my doorstep. A dream come true! I was the Regional Coordinator for Enviroschools before taking time out to have my two boys. I'm now super excited to be taking on the EMR Regional Coordinator role here. My hobbies include surfing and growing food.

It’s exciting to bring my Mountains to Sea training to freshwater habitats, and support communities to connect with their Awa and taonga species – especially our declining native whitebait species. I’m also a freediving instructor so you can expect to see me exploring both on and under the water!

My family have been delivering the Experiencing Marine Reserves and Whitebait Connection programmes in the Gisborne region for many years. When I began studying a Bachelor of applied science (communication and environment) in 2020 I discovered that what they are doing is where I need to be.
I became an endorsed EMR coordinator and formally joined the Gisborne team in 2021.
Giving whanau a snorkel experience, watching people's confidence grow in and out of the water and listening to how much they enjoyed it make this mahi incredibly rewarding.

Kia ora! Ko Jane tōku ingoa. I grew up in the small coastal town of Paekākāriki and spent my childhood rolling around in waves, floating in streams, bush bashing through shrubs, and climbing trees. The magic and interconnectedness of nature never cease to amaze me, so off I went to Uni to study marine biology and philosophy. A BSc and Masters in Marine Conservation later, I began working as an environmental science technician in water quality and ecology, expanding my ecological knowledge upstream into freshwater environments. As catchment coordinator for Wai Connection - Tatai Ki Te Wai, I now hope to take that knowledge to support the Hawke's Bay community in protecting and enhancing our wai, awa to moana, from the mountains to the sea.

As a young Māori growing up in Hawkes Bay I had the same problems learning inside the
classroom like so many others. This meant for me, seeking knowledge outside of the
classroom became one of my biggest passions. Leaving school at a young age I gained an
opportunity to work as a self employed scaffold contrator allowing me to experience different
pathways towards how I may explore my passion for seeking knowledge.
My passion led me to Tangaroa! I’ve always felt a huge connection to the sea and everything
Tangaroa had to teach. Tangaroa has provided me an opportunity to live in my
Turangawaewae and live as a Māori to learn and share the Tikanga and Matauranga to keep
our whanau safe.
Tangaroa has also provided the opportunity to establish a Charitable Trust named Tangata o
te Wai Charitable Trust. Through this trust we provideWater Safety and Dive Education
oppourtunities to whanau within Aotearoa.
In collaboration with MountainstoSea we couldn’t be more thankful for the opportunities
Tangaroa has provided and can’t wait to share them with you!

My background is in adventure since I could walk and I have lead groups into the outdoors for recreation and adventure since 1991. Initially Working at Whenua Iti Outdoor Pursuits Centre for 5 years and teaching others to white water raft and sea kayak in Canada and Switzerland from 2004 until 2006, I tutored and coordinated Environmental Studies Programmes for North Tec in the Maungaturoto and Mangonui in the Northland areas.
During 2007, I trained as primary teacher, mainly to educate students “outside the classroom”.
I live by the moana at Riuwaka near Motueka with my partner Scott and my two children Jade and Hunter .
I am passionate about protecting and educating others about our local marine reserves and why we need more of them in Nelson, Tasman, Golden Bay and the Marlborough Sounds by actively showing people what lives beneath the ocean and how marine reserves protect our fish species and habitats.
In my spare time you will find me outdoors taking photos, swimming, snorkelling, paddle boarding, tramping and paddling my Waka around our local waterways.

Growing up in Hawaii with a fisherman as a father and the sea on my doorstep primed me for a lifetime fascination and curiosity with the sea. I started working on a marine research vessel in my high school years and after completing a Bachelor of Marine Biology at Humboldt State University I worked on the high seas as a scientific observer in Alaska, NZ, Mauritius, and Antarctica. The adventure continues as I now get to share my enthusiasm and love of the ocean and rivers with the next generation through Tasman Bay Guardians!

I love the mountains, rivers, oceans and wild places.
At some point in my teenage years my awareness of these natural environments, the perceptions we have of them and the reality didn't quite meet up. To explore these thoughts further I studied Environmental Science and Botany obtaining a BSc in the 1990s and more recently a Diploma in Environmental Management. My work life led me in different directions whilst still endeavouring to uphold my environmental aspirations through life choices and the many volunteer opportunities available. Fortunately in recent years I have cycled back into the environmental arena and have had the privilege of being involved in some long term water quality monitoring within a wetland environment. I have held a long term fascination and interest in wetlands and their function within our ecosystem.
This role with MTS & Tasman Bay Guardians is now giving me the opportunity to get stuck in and effect real change on the ground, in and around our waterways with a group of passionate and dedicated people.
I believe that the health of our waterways is essential to our health as a people.

Kia ora! My name is Shelley McMurtrie and I am a Director and Principal Scientist at EOS Ecology.
I am 24 years into a career studying aquatic (freshwater and estuary/coastal) ecosystems. In addition to overseeing EOS Ecology’s science team, I author and review publications on aquatic systems and their management, resource consent-related reports and associated investigations, undertake resource consent audits (or peer review others’ audits) on behalf of Councils, and present expert evidence at hearings. I have published new keys for the identification of Subantarctic aquatic biota and have even been lucky enough to discover and help to classify new freshwater invertebrate species. I develop catchment management plans for small and large catchments; ascertaining the system’s state/pressures and identifying solutions at a catchment- and site-scale to improve the management and function of waterway catchments through a collective approach to implementation. I have also developed and implemented long-term management plans for the ongoing protection of endangered fish species. In addition to my focus in aquatic systems, I have been the technical lead for studies regarding sediment and erosion control, and an external supervisor and external peer reviewer for Master of Science students/candidates for NZ universities.
