On Sunday the 19th of May 2024, rangatahi gathered at Parangarahu - Horseshoe Bay, Tutukaka coast to participate in a Hauora Moana workshop led by Glenn Edney. Parangarahu is in the rohe of Ngāti Wai.
Funded by SkyCity, the Marine Mahi for Rangatahi programme utilises existing mentorship and environmental education frameworks to achieve leadership and education outcomes for participants and provide a pathway from volunteering, mentorship to cadetship opportunities and career pathways in Te Tai Tokerau and Tāmaki Makaurau.
Participants have the opportunity to undergo training, volunteer and progress to paid cadetship positions with EMR. On completing the programme participants have an increased knowledge of environmental issues and the actions we need to take to resolve them. They also have skills and practical- experience in implementing the solutions.
However, most importantly, they are inspired to protect and restore our shared life-sustaining ecosystems for future generations.
It was an early frosty morning and the participants followed event organiser Pippa Benton in convoy up over a private road. We were treated to beautiful views of Parangarahu/ Horseshoe Bay as we wound down the narrow track to the beach on the beautiful Tūtūkākā coast.

We started the morning off with a karakia in the secluded spot. Glenn then gave a thorough introduction into the Hauora Moana process before we hopped into the water. We cruised around the reef, spotting koura, red moki, parore, spotties, triplefin and more! Following our snorkel we warmed up over kai and had a group consensus discussion to come up with an overall assessment of mauri for Parangarahu Bay.

A huge thank you to Glenn for sharing his time and expertise with us, you are a fountain of knowledge.
That’s a wrap for our Marine Mahi for Rangatahi Events for the 2024/25 season! Stay tuned for more exciting things coming up at the beginning of next summer!
