Title: Marine Programme Intern

Location: Auckland region

Duration: October 2024 – April 2025

Commitment: 2-3 days per week. Flexibility with days but one weekend day is required to help with community events.

Mountains to Sea are looking for a summer Marine Intern in the Auckland region to help us run our popular marine programme - Experiencing Marine Reserves (EMR).

The EMR programme is a term-long programme teaching students about their local marine environment through class sessions, pool training, field trips and snorkel/kayak experiences. Our EMR programme also sees community snorkel and paddle events rolled out each summer offering these experiences to local community members. In your internship role you will be working alongside our coordinators and helping to support the delivery of the EMR programme. You will be a key part of our team and the successful delivery of these events. You will receive on-the-job training, gaining valuable skills and experience working in the water and with people. 


Timing: The Internship role is ideally suited for 2 or 3 days a week over the school term starting from early October to late December 2023, and recommencing mid-January 2024 to mid-April 2024. Timing is flexible and working days may vary depending on school bookings and other needs. One weekend day will be required for community events.

THE ROLE (main activities and responsibilities)

As our intern, you will gain experience in a wide range of activities that will support and enable the day-to-day delivery of our school programmes and community events. These include:


Delivery of Education Programmes, Community Events and Community Science.

The Marine Intern will:

  • Support delivery of marine/freshwater education programmes to school and community participants across the greater Auckland region

  • Actively contribute EMR/MTS programmes being well organised and delivered to a range of school students.

  • Support delivery of community snorkel days and community events.

  • Support Coordinators when working with student and community lead action projects.

  • Attend regular planning meetings with EMR Coordinators and other MTS Coordinators to ensure coordinated delivery. 

  • Maintain positive working relationships that support the delivery and action components of these programmes.




Equipment, Resources, Communications and Facilities

The Marine Intern will:

  • Ensure facilities, resources and equipment are fit for purpose

  • Assist in maintenance and upkeep of the trailer and marine equipment. 

  • Assist in ensuring facilities and equipment are always ready for programme sessions.

  • Assist in the development of interpretative and educational resources.

  • Support storytelling via social media (Instagram/Facebook) by providing content and write-ups for online stories and social media posts.


Volunteer Management 

The Marine Intern will:

  • Assist the Volunteer Manager in managing logistics of volunteers involved in the EMR programmes

  • Ensure all volunteers are signed in before the field trip/event starts. 

  • Assisting in the gear up of volunteers.

  • Being the first point of contact for volunteer and make them feel welcome and included by making sure they are fed, warm and happy.

  • Assist coordinators in directing volunteers during set up and pack down of community events.


Health and Safety 

The Marine Intern will:

  • Follow all practicable steps to ensure the safety and welfare of all EMR participants and volunteers and crew

  • Learn and apply EMR/MTS H&S policy and forms for both school delivery and community events

  • Work in strict accordance with H&S operating procedures and training provided, and actively take steps to minimise and reduce hazards.


SKILLS NEEDED

Ideally you will have some of the following expertise and experience: 


  • Experience diving/snorkeling and a high level of confidence in the marine environment is a must. 

  • Love nature and the outdoors. Passing on your enthusiasm, practical skills and knowledge is a huge part of this role. 

  • Fit and resilient. Our job is often hot, cold, wet & windy. We work far and wide, especially during summer. 

  • Hold a full driver’s license (helpful, but not essential). Ability to travel to sites.

  • Marine science knowledge via experience (in the field) or through formal training. 

  • Experience working with and for young people – and able to relate to students from all walks of life, ages and stages. Teaching experience is an advantage. 

  • Able to connect and work with a wide variety of people.

  • A sensitivity, and commitment to, Tiriti o Waitangi principles. 

  • Understanding of local environmental, social and cultural context. 

  • Organised, self-starter, manages varied workload cheerfully and effectively. 

  • Professional, constructive, problem solver, able to work with others. 

  • Skills in fundraising, communications, photography, websites, and promotions would also be great assets to our team.
