Kia ora koutou, ko Stella tōku ingoa. Growing up with a profound love for our moana, I've always been driven to protect it and share it with others. I am currently pursuing a Bachelors degree in Marine Conservation and Aquaculture, my passion for preserving marine ecosystems led me to the Tasman Bay Guardians and the Experiencing Marine Reserves programme. Volunteering with EMR felt like a natural fit—an opportunity to combine my love for the ocean with meaningful volunteer work.
From the moment I joined the EMR team, I was greeted with aroha and kindness. Starting as a shadow to senior snorkel guides, I quickly transitioned into leading my own groups, sharing the magic of the underwater world with eager participants. One of my favourite moments is when someone pulls their head out of the water after spotting their first fish, creating their own connection to what lies beneath the sea.
Volunteering with EMR has not only provided me with invaluable hands-on experience but has also opened doors to new opportunities for growth and learning.
The sense of whanaungatanga within EMR is unparalleled. Supported and encouraged by the team, I've been empowered to step out of my comfort zone and embrace challenges. Each dive and educational session reaffirms the importance of our collective efforts in preserving our marine environment.
In essence, my volunteer journey with EMR is a testament to the power of passion and collective action. Together, we can make a significant impact in protecting and cherishing our moana for generations to come.
