Frequently Asked Questions

What is Fish of the Year?

New Zealand’s Fish of the Year is a competition where people can vote for their three favourite fish. Enthusiastic people who are interested in campaigning for a fish may contact the Mountains to Sea Conservation Trust at callum @ mountainstosea.org.nz or pippa@ mountainstosea.org.nz

Why is Fish of the Year important?

Fish of the Year is designed to raise awareness of all freshwater and marine life, and in doing so focus attention on our fragile ecosystem.

When is Fish of the Year?

Voting in 2025 opens at 9am on Saturday 1st March. Fish of the Year is on during Sea Week. The voting will run for two weeks, the competition will close at 5pm on Sunday 16th March. The winner will be announced at 9am on Monday 17th March.

How many people vote?

We get around 1000 people voting for their favourite fish. But each year this number gets higher! Let’s make 2025 the best year ever!

How does the voting work?

  • Each person (using an email address) can cast 3 different votes

  • The fish with the most votes will be declared the winner for 2025.

Can I use the logo?

We have a new logo and you’re welcome to increase awareness. The seaweed crown is the main element.
